How to choose topics for #ELTchat Discussions

Since we started #ELTchat last September, we have discussed a wide number of topics, but with many new members joining our conversations every week, it is very natural that we will get requests for topics which we “have done”.

Please, include topics which

• have not been covered already in previous #ELTchats

• are relevant to ELT teachers and teaching foreign languages

• are not targeted attacks on individuals or institutions

• are simply and clearly expressed.

The #ELTchat moderators reserve the right not to post comments or to include them in the poll if they do not follow the above guidelines.

Before you propose a topic, do please check the transcripts index on this blog or go to the #ELTchat wiki and click on the Transcripts or Summaries Links to see what has been covered so far.

If you see your topic but would still like to discuss a different aspect or set of issues, do submit it and we will consider including it again!

    I’m still interested in my topic from last week.
    Is it really possible to train EFL teachers online?
    (I mean as in online CELTA or CertTESOL)

    MAs are usually taken as a way of advancing careers. Is an MA in TESOL, a worthy investment of fime and money or an overpriced luxury in our field?

  3. I like the topic of MAs as suggested by Leahn. My suggestions for this week are:

    1. What is the best way to organise role-plays?
    2. Are role-plays a useful tool in the classroom?

    # I don’t like incorporating role-play in the classroom as it has a type of imitation feel and quality about it. However, I would be keen to learn more about incorporating and improving role-play in the classroom.

  4. I have just thought of one more topic in relation to linguistic surgery (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/8695371/British-student-has-tongue-lengthened-to-speak-Korean.html):

    3. Is linguistic surgery necessary to improve pronunciation or can pronunciation be acquired over time?

    I suppose this topic will have various issues (NETs vs NNETs, World Englishes, intelligibility, etc). Anyhow this is my contribution for Wednesday
