Propose and join #ELTchat!
Please bear in mind that if you are proposing a topic you should try and join the chat if it is chosen (though time zones can make that difficult).
Please also note that the chat moderators do monitor the voting. Cases of block voting are followed up and, in such a case, the votes will be disqualified and results of poll will be announced on our blog.
Since we started #ELTchat in September 2010, we have discussed a wide number of topics, but with many new members joining our conversations every week, it is very natural that we will get requests for topics which we “have done”.
Check our summaries page to see if your idea has already been included in a past #ELTchat
Please, include topics which
- have not been covered already in previous #ELTchats
- are relevant to ELT teachers and teaching foreign languages
- are not targeted attacks on individuals or institutions
- are simply and clearly expressed.
The #ELTchat moderators reserve the right to edit or reword a topic or not to include in the poll if it does not follow the above guidelines.
Before you propose a topic, do please check the summaries page on this blog or go to the #ELTchat wiki and click on the Transcripts or Summaries Links to see what has been covered so far.
If you see your topic but would still like to discuss a different aspect or set of issues, do submit it and we will consider including it again!

Employability skills in the ESL classroom
Which specific skills should an English language teacher teaching young adults / college students include in order to create job-ready candidates?
The impact of learner motivation on achievement of potential. What do you think of it?
Some teachers are set against students using their phones in class. How can we harness the tech to show that it is of value, yet take account of the fears of our colleagues that the students are not concentrating on the lesson?
What new idea, strategy, technique have you tried since the start of 2014?
@Tareen – it’s very difficult to understand your topic – young learners and job readiness are not compatible concepts – we might use it but leave the YL bit out
@Konstantinos – we have already held three #ELTchats on motivation; perhaps you forgot to check the summaries page?

@Fay, thanks for stopping by! Interesting topic and there’s been quite a bit of discussion in terms of Web 2.0 in ELT. If you do a search with these words in the search bar, you’ll get a whole list of past transcripts and summaries. Could you check and then perhaps be more specific with your question if still needed? Marisa…Young adults , not young learners.
In many 3rd world countries such as India, a good percentage of learners in the age bracket of 16-19 seek employment(full time work right after school, as well as part time work as they enter college).
Eng Language Teachers need to work on their Ss’ English to help them apply for jobs & appear in interviews.
