Many thanks, Priscilla:-) <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">#ELTchat Summary<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>March 9, 2011.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal;\">The chat was kicked off by @<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/rliberni\">rliberni<\/a> dropping the chat topic question:<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2>How can we avoid teacher burnout?<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A number of suggestions were listed by chatters; the most recurrent were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being aware of it and keeping and eye open;<\/li>\n<li>Having a PLN to vent with;<\/li>\n<li>Doing capoeira;<\/li>\n<li>Taking sometime for yourself;<\/li>\n<li>Eating right;<\/li>\n<li>Exercising;<\/li>\n<li>Making a fool of yourself;<\/li>\n<li>Getting a good night\u2019s sleep;<\/li>\n<li>Tweeting;<\/li>\n<li>Attending conferences;<\/li>\n<li>Sharing (ideas, feelings\u2026);<\/li>\n<li>Seeing a therapist;<\/li>\n<li>Changing teaching topics (e.g.: from teaching General English to teaching Exams);<\/li>\n<li>PD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although the symptoms of burnout were extensively brainstormed most of them seemed to end up affecting two distinct, though co-dependent, areas:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Emotional:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Boredom;<\/li>\n<li>Irritability;<\/li>\n<li>Mood swings;<\/li>\n<li>Lack of enthusiasm;<\/li>\n<li>Lack of motivation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Professional:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Teaching the same content too many times;<\/li>\n<li>Lack of creativity;<\/li>\n<li>Unplanned lessons;<\/li>\n<li>Having to do too much paperwork;<\/li>\n<li>Unhealthy competition;<\/li>\n<li>PD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another issue raised was concerning the actions to be taken by Institutes, schools, DOS and coordinators towards the problem. Chatters raised ideas and gave suggestions, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Non-teaching related opportunities for socializing;<\/li>\n<li>Organize weekend trips 2 or 3 times a year;<\/li>\n<li>Praise and support teachers;<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge accomplishments;<\/li>\n<li>Provide proper training and guidance;<\/li>\n<li>Encourage action research groups;<\/li>\n<li>Blended learning (3 days of F2F lessons and 2 distance)<\/li>\n<li>Motivate!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The good side of it is that some actions have already been put into practice:<\/p>\n<p>@<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/CeciELT\">CeciELT<\/a>: \u201cMy school got us quick massage therapists in the staff room for 2 days in our craziest week last semester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was also discussed that schools should be run by educators who have management skills, so as to understand and see eye to eye with teachers\u2019 opinions and needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some chatters also shared their experiences and feelings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>@<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/waykatewit\">waykatewit<\/a>:<strong> \u201c<\/strong>I myself suffered from burnout a few years ago. One year ago -back to life.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>@<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/annapires\">annapires<\/a>: \u201cOne thing that worries me abt burnout is when it leads to loss of enthusiasm. We see that a lot in state school teaching here\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>@<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/naomishema\">naomishema<\/a>: \u201cSeriously, participating in #<a href=\"http:\/\/wthashtag.com\/30goals\">30goals<\/a> , caused me to look at my work from a different angle, find re-energizing, despite being work.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>@<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Fuertesun\">Fuertesun<\/a>: \u201cI see a lot of tchrs off work in the state system here\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I believe some tweets need to be read and re-read a number of times as they mean much more than 140 characters \u2013 I chose a few; the list is long, though:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>@<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/DinaDobrou\">DinaDobrou<\/a>: \u201cSo far it all comes down to \u2018All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy\u2019\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>@<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/dejongdd\">dejongdd<\/a>: \u201c@<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Marisa_C\">Marisa_C<\/a> Back from burnout? Had to change attitude toward circumstances.
