Simple, effective, reliable, and it works all over the world. It can be used to bring experts or other teachers into your classrooms. You can use the \u2018chat\u2019 feature to share files and write in vocabulary. You could use Skype instead of traditional listening tracks to Skype friends in the UK\/US (or other countries!)\u00a0For example: \u201cWith my [<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/shellterrell\">Shelly Terrell&#8217;s<\/a>] 4 to 6 yr-old German students they learned how to do origami from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/eherrod\">@EHerrod<\/a>\u2018s son in the UK via Skype\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/\">YouTube<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; even those who hate tech will still try it! It\u2019s easy to forget how helpful thousands of the clips can be, although some schools block it.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; the groups function is useful for educators<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ted.com\/\">TED<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; hundreds of inspiring videos by thinkers and leaders in every field imaginable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>Voice recording<\/strong><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/vocaroo.com\/\">Vocaroo<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 voice recorder. Easy to use (single click), no need for registration.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/\">Soundcloud<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 voice recorder with the added facility of voice commenting. Each unit of the book is accompanied by one podcast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Tools for teachers to create activities \/ materials<\/strong><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/triptico.co.uk\/\">Triptico<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a single software download providing loads of free tools; especially good for classrooms with interactive whiteboards (IWBs). Word magnets are good for colour-coding grammar explanations. The card game is good for randomly choosing speaking topics. It\u2019s really easy to use and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/david_triptico\">@David_Triptico<\/a>\u00a0is constantly adding new resources to it.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/quizlet.com\/\">Quizlet<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a great tool for vocabulary where students (and teachers) can create flashcards and immediately play games with them. Students really enjoy using it.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/hotpot.uvic.ca\/\">Hot Potatoes<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; freeware including \u201csix applications, enabling you to create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching\/ordering and gap-fill exercises for the World Wide Web\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socrative.com\/\">Socrative<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; \u201ca smart student response system that empowers teachers to engage their classrooms through a series of educational exercises and games via smartphones, laptops, and tablets\u201d and it\u2019s free [this was my personal favourite discovery of the chat]<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.discoveryeducation.com\/free-puzzlemaker\/?CFID=1345450&amp;CFTOKEN=43893274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Puzzle Maker<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a site which allows you to create printable wordsearches, crosswords and other puzzles.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.toolsforeducators.com\/crossword\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Crossword Maker<\/a>\u00a0just lets you create crosswords.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordsearchmaker.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wordsearch Maker<\/a>\u00a0creates wordsearches.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/nikpeachey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nik Peachey<\/a>\u00a0describes how to use the latter\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/quickshout.blogspot.com\/2009\/07\/how-to-make-word-search-puzzle-for-your.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/wordle.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wordle<\/a>\u00a0\/\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tagxedo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tagxedo<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; word cloud generators. Could be used for simple \u2018word find\u2019 activities such as \u2018Spot the word with a prefix\u2019<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/languagegarden.org\/\">Language Garden<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; language plants make sentences, poems and grammar look beautiful, as well as providing visual prompts for students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>Creative tools for students<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sp-studio.de\/\">SP-studio<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; create cartoon characters based on the style of South Park cartoons. Kids can then create profiles for their cartoon characters.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/surveymonkey.com\/\">Survey monkey<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; helps students to practise question forms by creating online questionnaires, as well as finding out more about their fellow students. Very easy to use.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/goanimate.com\/\">GoAnimate<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; online video creator<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ilife\/imovie\/\">iMovie<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; kids can create \u201cmovie trailers\u201d about books they like<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/docs.google.com\/\">Google Docs<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software available online for collaboration, sharing or private use. Can be used for essay writing and other writing assignments as well as for individual vocabulary banks for students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Tools which you can integrate other things into<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/edmodo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmodo<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a closed social network for education (<a title=\"Edmodo\" href=\"http:\/\/sandymillin.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/29\/edmodo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my post about Edmodo<\/a>) \u2013 I use it to share resources with my students.<\/li>\n<li>Wikis \u2013 but you need lots of tools to put in them. Some wiki providers include\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pbworks.com\/\">pbworks<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wikispaces.com\/\">wikispaces<\/a>. They\u00a0allow embedding of other tools.<\/li>\n<li>Blogs \u2013 spaces to provide information, links and create online texts. Some providers include\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.com\/\">wordpress<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/edublogs.org\/\">edublogs<\/a>\u00a0and Posterous (see below).\u00a0They\u00a0allow embedding of other tools.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/posterous.com\/\">Posterous<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; it focuses on all four skills; it\u2019s easy to use; there are free apps on various platforms. Intuitive, and great for introducing blogging to students.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/moodle.org\/\">Moodle<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a tool for creating complete virtual learning environments (VLEs). It allows embedding of other tools. Safe for kids too.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.glogster.com\/\">Glogster<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; good for project work. It allows embedding of other tools too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>For independent learners<\/strong><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/englishcentral.com\/\">English Central<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; students can use this outside the classroom to practise listening, reading and pronunciation as well as improve their vocabulary.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lyricstraining.com\/\">Lyrics training<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; students can listen to songs and complete the lyrics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h5>WHEN YOU IMPLEMENT A WEB TOOL IN THE CLASSROOM, WHAT IS THE CRITERIA FOR USING IT WITH LEARNERS? WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A WEB TOOL?<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Accessible for free on many platforms<\/li>\n<li>No (or at least very easy) registration<\/li>\n<li>User-friendly for both teachers and students<\/li>\n<li>Supports various skills<\/li>\n<li>Fun!<\/li>\n<li>A way to make English a tool, rather than concentrating on the language aspect<\/li>\n<li>Free<\/li>\n<li>Easy to use<\/li>\n<li>Offer various activities<\/li>\n<li>Practical<\/li>\n<li>Allow students to practise their English in a meaningful way<\/li>\n<li>Justified from a pedagogical point of view, not just because it\u2019s a cool new toy<\/li>\n<li>Ease of integration with other tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>HOW DO WE GET NON-TECH-SAVVY TEACHERS EXCITED ABOUT WEB TOOLS?<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Show the real pedagogical value<\/li>\n<li>Through their students\u00a0&#8211; if you get the students enthused, they will tell their other teachers<\/li>\n<li>Start with showing them examples of why they can get excited, not how to use web tools<\/li>\n<li>Show them how much time it can save them, although at the beginning it feels like they take more time<\/li>\n<li>Lead by example<\/li>\n<li>Introduce things in small doses<\/li>\n<li>Give them a task that must use a web tool \/\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/spsprofessionaldevelopment.wikispaces.com\/Tech+Tastings\">taster sessions<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Present them with simple, quick and practical classroom uses of these tools<\/li>\n<li>Go back to Maslow\u2019s Hierarchy of Needs and help them see why they need a tool<\/li>\n<li>Encourage them to play with tools for personal use first, for example by making birthday greetings<\/li>\n<li>Visit their lessons and suggest alternatives<\/li>\n<li>Do workshops which teachers bring their own laptops to &#8211;\u00a0doing IT is better than watching<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>BUT:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>We shouldn\u2019t feel we have to. Some teachers don\u2019t have this option, and others are really not interested.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/reasons4\">Gareth Davies<\/a>\u00a0wrote a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/garethsetlchatreview.blogspot.com\/2012\/03\/webtools-2922012.html\">blog post<\/a>\u00a0expanding on this after the chat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>TIPS FOR TEACHERS<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Be consistent \u2013 don\u2019t flit from one tool to another.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t get swept away with new tools.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t try to do too much too soon.<\/li>\n<li>Play around with tools to help you become more confident.<\/li>\n<li>Test things out throughly before you introduce them. OR Experiment together with the students. (a language learning task in itself)<\/li>\n<li>Introduce them in small doses<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you have a plan B, just in case the tech fails. Don\u2019t freak out! You could teach the 3rd conditional \u2013 If they program had worked you would have seen\u2026\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s1.wp.com\/wp-includes\/images\/smilies\/icon_wink.gif?m=1129645325g\" alt=\";)\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Ask students to share their favourites too \u2013 they might know about tools you don\u2019t<\/li>\n<li>If students know that the tech exists, they can decide whether to use it or not.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare for excitement from kids! Never be afraid to learn with them.<\/li>\n<li>Some tools may seem too childish for adults.<\/li>\n<li>If something doesn\u2019t work the first time, try to analyse why and work out what you could do differently. Don\u2019t just assume the tech was wrong. It might work with one group of students but not with another.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that the pedagogy comes first \u2013 don\u2019t just use tech for the sake of it.<\/li>\n<li>Remember that you can often do the same things without tech \u2013 do you really need it?\u00a0If you can\u2019t justify why the tech version is better, there\u2019s no reason to use it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sandymillin.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/6159294230_bfbf3f1330_o.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Make the most of your old computer\" src=\"http:\/\/sandymillin.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/6159294230_bfbf3f1330_o.jpeg?w=300&amp;h=225\" alt=\"Make the most of your old computer\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>PROVISOS<\/h5>\n<p>Some of these tools are not available in every country or at every school. Technology is still far off for a lot of teachers.
