The focus was on \u2018exploiting\u2019 (making good use of) clips rather than dwelling on any possible disadvantages.\u00a0 A huge number of resources were mentioned and these are all linked to at the end of this brief summary.<\/p>\n<div><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<p>2) Issues of\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">length<\/span>.\u00a0 As a continuation of above, really, there was general agreement that plenty of language work was possible with videos of 5-6 minutes in length, 10 minutes max. \u00a0Some felt that information overload can occur or that students fall into a kind of &#8216;TV trance&#8217; if the clip is too long.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>3)\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Criteria<\/span>\u00a0for choosing.\u00a0 This was, perhaps, under discussed. The question was raised near the beginning and there was sufficient criteria put forward for it to warrant a section in the video summary.\u00a0 Ideas included quality, engagement, topic or content and whether higher order thinking skills would be utilised.\u00a0 But a deeper exploration of this issue never really got going, such as the basic question of what comes first, the video or the lesson objective?<\/p>\n<div><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<p>4)\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Type<\/span>\u00a0of video.\u00a0 Animation, advertisements, silent films or ones without recognisable dialogue were popular choices.\u00a0 For some, it was important that the video clip used had some kind of pedagogic aim, even if that word was not explicitly used. \u00a0\u00a0For some, it depended on the level and age of learners.\u00a0 Some felt authenticity was important, and for a short time the chat briefly touched upon students making their own videos.\u00a0 For the most part, videos that can be used were ones not intended for language teaching, indeed the less talk the better!<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>and 5)\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Techniques<\/span>.\u00a0 Towards the end of the chat, ideas were put forward as to the way to incorporate video clips into the lesson.\u00a0 Certain techniques, such as using freeze frames, split viewing, using them for prediction tasks, and getting students to do voiceovers or commentaries, were highlighted.\u00a0 It was also mentioned that getting students to re-enact or \u2018stage\u2019 the clip, especially if there was some kind of narrative, was also a possibility.\u00a0 \u00a0\u2018Videotelling\u2019 was another idea raised, and for more information on that, participants were guided towards Jamie Keddie on the subject (see links).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-mYmO6IL3784\/Uaz0vpYKVkI\/AAAAAAAAB8I\/O6Dgv0mYBc4\/s1600\/Vimeo_Staff_Picks.jpg\" width=\"588\" height=\"150\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/channels\/staffpicks\">https:\/\/vimeo.com\/channels\/staffpicks<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>The video clips come from links mentioned in the chat.
