It is an hour well spent on Wednesdays, so when I was asked to write the summary of this Wednesday&#8217;s chat, I gladly said, &#8221; sure!&#8221; So, here goes!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.5em;\">The topic<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Teaching English in the corporate World: which is the best approach and which activities work best with in-company classes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<em>A similar topic had been discussed before,\u00a0so it is a good idea to read that summary too\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/UJly7MdvLj\"><strong><em>http:\/\/t.co\/UJly7MdvLj<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>\u00a0\u00a0as it taps into what was discussed during this chat as well.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Challenges of teaching in-company classes<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;What are some of the challenges you face when teaching in-company classes?&#8221;\u00a0(@Marisa_C). Another idea was that companies should give extrinsic motivation and even charge students if they are absent too many times! It is necessary to keep the students engaged\u00a0and motivated so as to avoid absenteeism. It is essential to show students that what you are doing with them is directly linked to their work!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-sPOtvEJHNdY\/UwiqqRH1tHI\/AAAAAAAAAFw\/b0p7eVWWchw\/s1600\/abseinti.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-sPOtvEJHNdY\/UwiqqRH1tHI\/AAAAAAAAAFw\/b0p7eVWWchw\/s1600\/abseinti.png\" width=\"541\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333399;\">A bit about methodology<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>@teacherphili asked if there was a &#8220;particular methodology or approach applied to these corporate classes or if depends on the situation?&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;It depends on learner expectations of education experience, but I tend to use more output-feedback&#8221; (@teflgeek).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">What tasks are\u00a0appropriate for our learners?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Before deciding on tasks, the importance of needs assessment came up. Teachers need to understand their learners&#8217; needs before deciding on what to do in their classes and what homework to assign.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone agreed that learning in this case should be task based. The focus should be on tasks and not just exercises.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Role playing(@Marisa_C\/@joannacre\/@teflgeek).<\/li>\n<li>Tasks applicable to work, work related. Business students do not want to waste time!(@CotterHUE).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The chat about tasks overlapped with what to assign as homework so\u00a0read further on for some more ideas on tasks\/homework.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">What do I do about homework?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The first question that arose was whether to give homework or not. Most agreed that it is a good idea to assign it but it is necessary to make it related to their work so that they can be more motivated to do it. Ideas regarding homework:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0PPT\/ Prezi, which help students practise their presentation skills*.<\/li>\n<li>Newspaper articles, which\u00a0learners can read during their coffee breaks : ).<\/li>\n<li>Pecha Kucha can help them improve fluency skills (Marisa_C).<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A reflection of\u00a0a daily work done in the context of a job (@jankenb2)<\/li>\n<li>Reports, emails, telephone conversations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-XHRAz-84jds\/UwjYIC7SXkI\/AAAAAAAAAGA\/W0Th9I_SWiM\/s1600\/Untitled+hw.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-XHRAz-84jds\/UwjYIC7SXkI\/AAAAAAAAAGA\/W0Th9I_SWiM\/s1600\/Untitled+hw.png\" width=\"541\" height=\"94\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>* @Nouella89 asked the very interesting question of whether students are learning or playing with the technology and there was a bit of a discussion on the benefits of PPT vs Prezi and vice versa(@teacherphili: &#8220;PPT can be repetitive\/Prezi style over content, mind you&#8221;\/ @ Marisa_C :&#8221;Prezi can be a fun tool for presentations&#8221;)\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the whole, there was consensus on the fact that homework needs to be mandatory, something that doesn&#8217;t take long, is interesting and\u00a0challenging!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Assessment was briefly discussed during this chat. It is important that there is assessment and different types of it (@HadaLitim). Maybe this is something that can be discussed in another #eltchat?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">My final thoughts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>On the whole, this was a very interesting chat. A\u00a0lot of useful ideas and\u00a0thoughts were shared.
