Get a Twitter Account<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you just want to watch the #ELTChat and not take part then you can follow it on TWUBS\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twubs.com\/eltchat\">here<\/a>. But if you want to take part you&#8217;ll need to get a Twitter account.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pick-your-app\"><strong>2. Pick your app<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be covering the two most popular ones here:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.1;\">Hootsuite<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.1;\">Tweetdeck<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hootsuite-signing-up\"><strong>3.a.\u00a0Hootsuite &#8211; Signing Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The following <a href=\"https:\/\/hootsuite.com\/signup?planId=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a> will take you straight to the registration screen for Hootsuite. Once you&#8217;ve filled in your details you&#8217;ll need to connect your Twitter account to it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/eltchat-walkthrough-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img_width_100 alignnone wp-image-6690 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/eltchat-walkthrough-1.jpg\" alt=\"eltchat-walkthrough-1\" width=\"833\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Twitter will then prompt you to connect your account, so you&#8217;ll need to sign into Twitter (if you&#8217;re not already).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img_width_100 alignnone wp-image-6692 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/hootsuite-account.jpg\" alt=\"hootsuite account\" width=\"784\" height=\"688\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Skip the rest of the steps and head to your new Hootsuite account. Rather than seeing all your Twitter information in a single big feed, Hootsuite allows you to split off chunks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you hover over any of the buttons, they&#8217;ll go green and pressing them will add the stream to your page.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For example: Clicking on Mentions\u00a0will give you a stream of all\u00a0the tweets of mention you and nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you want to send a tweet with Hootsuite you type it into the compose a message box at the top of the page and press &#8220;Send Now&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all great, it&#8217;s all basic Twitter stuff. What we want to do however is follow the hashtag #ELTChat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Click the add stream button shown below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/add-stream.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img_width_100 alignnone wp-image-6695 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/add-stream.jpg\" alt=\"add stream\" width=\"781\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A new window will open up. Select the keyword tab and then type in &#8220;#eltchat&#8221; into the word phrase box. It should look like this:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/eltchat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6696\" src=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/eltchat.jpg\" alt=\"eltchat\" width=\"496\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then click &#8220;Add&#8221;\u00a0so the word appears below and then &#8220;Add Stream&#8221;. The window will close and you should now be looking at the main screen with a stream!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img_width_100 alignnone wp-image-6697 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/success.jpg\" alt=\"success\" width=\"771\" height=\"672\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tweetdeck-signing-up\"><strong>4.a.\u00a0Tweetdeck &#8211; Signing Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sign up for Tweetdeck is on the homepage, so head to it here and you should be able to sign up using your Twitter handle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/tweetdeck.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img_width_100 alignnone wp-image-6699 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/tweetdeck.png\" alt=\"tweetdeck\" width=\"813\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve signed up it&#8217;ll ask who uses your account, select &#8220;Only You&#8221; (it gives the option for more than one, because companies will often use these sort of apps.).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Click &#8220;Get Started&#8221; and you&#8217;ll be greeted with a home screen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tweetdeck-how-does-it-work\"><strong>4.a.\u00a0Tweetdeck &#8211;\u00a0How does it work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tweetdeck works very similarly to Hootsuite. Rather than seeing all your Twitter information in a single big feed, Tweetdeck also\u00a0allows you to split off chunks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Hootsuite it comes pre-populated with some basic columns. Clicking the plus on the left sidebar will allow you to create more and clicking the blue quill at the top will allow you to write a tweet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We want to follow the hashtag #eltchat so we&#8217;re going to click the plus:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/tweetdeck2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img_width_100 alignnone wp-image-6700 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/tweetdeck2.jpg\" alt=\"tweetdeck2\" width=\"927\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And then select search. The window will close and search sidebar will open and we&#8217;ll type in &#8220;#eltchat&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/eltchat-tweetdeck-search.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img_width_100 alignnone wp-image-6703 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/eltchat-tweetdeck-search.jpg\" alt=\"#eltchat tweetdeck search\" width=\"796\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s showing us the Twitter user #ELTChat, but we want to watch the hashtag not a single user so either press enter (Without hovering over the user) or click the search icon. A column should open up.\u00a0We then click the Add Column button at the bottom:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/add-column.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6704 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/eltchat.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/add-column.jpg\" alt=\"add column\" width=\"448\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Success, we should now have a new column with #eltchat at the top.
