Self-directed learning<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>do they want it? <strong>(fionaljp<\/strong>);\u00a0are they motivated?<\/li>\n<li>the relationship between motivation and autonomy (<strong>Nafooh1988)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>do sts value the importance of autonomous learning? I think what I might find useful another time would be to focus on specific areas of independent learning and autonomous tasks, e.g.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>a) the <strong>WHAT<\/strong>, e.g.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>student materials (e.g. workbook, \u2018supplementary\u2019 materials);\u00a0especially prepared \/ set-up stuff (designed\/prepared\/suggested by the teacher .. or later by students \u2013 e.g. Quizlet); miscellaneous stuff \u2013 e.g. films, articles, etc. (\u2018authentic\u2019 materials, suggested by T\/St);\u00a0real-life stuff (e.g. buying bread at the supermarket, going to a film, reading a newspaper\/magazine\/brochure \u2013 in an L2 [probably] environment;\u00a0online social media in English (use of Facebook, Twitter, blogs. etc); etc.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>b) the <strong>HOW<\/strong>, i.e.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>student- or teacher-led;\u00a0competition\/challenge\/gamification elements;\u00a0etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>c)<strong> KEEPING RECORDS<\/strong>, comparing and sharing with other students, etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When \/ Where \/ For how long (activity length) \/ Outcomes (benefits-pitfalls) \/ Follow-up suggestions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a future #ELTchat could drop in to focus on some of this (but by no means all!) \u2013 the more focused the topic, the deeper we can go, and perhaps this would be useful!<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to all for joining in last Wednesday \u2013 it was great to be part of the group!
